HAITI
After Hurricane Matthew, the number of people dead reached 546, there are 438 people injured and 128 missing. Some 2.1 million people have been affected across the country. There are still 176,000 people displaced by the Hurricane. The authorities and humanitarian agencies have expressed concern about an increase in cholera cases and vector-borne diseases. Humanitarian partners launched an Appeal for US$ 120 million to assist 750,000 of the most affected people.

It is estimated that 90 % of the houses in the municipalities of Baracoa and Maisi (Guantánamo) have been severely damaged. Some 110,000 people live in these two municipalities. The World Food Programme estimates that 180,000 people are in need of food assistance.
By the end of last week, 37,000 people remained evacuated.

CDEMA and UNDAC teams assessed damage in affected areas of Andros, Grand Bahamas and New Providence. Preliminary observations in Grand Bahamas indicate that 3,500 people are living in shelters or with relatives.
According to PAHO/WHO, the primary needs are: potable water, food and preventive measures against vector-borne diseases, health awareness through advertisements in public media and psychological support.

According to the State of the Region Report, published by ‘La Nación’ of Costa Rica, military spending increased by 149 % in ten years in Honduras, three times more than the other countries of Central America. The important increase of equipment of armies may affect the effective protection of human rights, if likewise, state institutions are strengthened, the report said.
